The Helper Who Felt Too Small

A retelling for children, based on Bahá'í Chronicles.

Long ago, the Báb chose a small group of His very first followers and gave them a special name: the Letters of the Living. They were the ones who believed in Him before almost anyone else in the whole world. One of them was a man named Mullá Hasan Bajistání. He was the sixth.

It was a great honor — one of the greatest honors a person could be given. And at first, Mullá Hasan worked hard to share the good news. He traveled and told people about the Báb and the new teachings he had come to love so much.

But here is a surprising thing about Mullá Hasan. Deep in his heart, he did not feel like someone special at all. When he thought about the high station the Báb had given him — being one of those first, precious Letters of the Living — he felt he was not good enough for it. He felt too small for such a big honor.

So he went to live quietly in a city called Karbala. He was not chasing praise. He was not asking people to notice him. He simply wanted to keep his faith close and live a humble life.

And there is one more thing we know about him. Some years later, Mullá Hasan journeyed to the city of Baghdad — and there he came to visit Bahá'u'lláh. Even after all that time, his loving, faithful heart was still seeking the ones who were holy and dear to him.

Mullá Hasan teaches us something gentle and true. You do not have to feel big or important to do something good. Sometimes the people who think themselves the smallest carry the most beautiful, humble hearts of all — and those quiet hearts are never forgotten.
