Mírzá Mihdí (the Purest Branch)
Mírzá Mihdí — known throughout the Bahá'í tradition by the title the Purest Branch (Ghuṣn-i-Aṭhar) — Bahá'u'lláh's youngest son by His first wife Ásíyih Khánum; amanuensis to Bahá'u'lláh in the 'Akká period; died on 23 June 1870 at the age of approximately twenty-two from injuries sustained when he fell through a skylight in the barracks of 'Akká while pacing in prayer.
Origins
Mírzá Mihdí was born in 1848 in Tehran into the Núrí household of Bahá'u'lláh and Ásíyih Khánum. He was their fourth child — the younger brother of 'Abbás Effendi (the future 'Abdu'l-Bahá, born 1844), Bahíyyih Khánum (the future Greatest Holy Leaf, born 1846), and an older brother who had died in infancy.
His early childhood coincided with the catastrophic disruptions that fell on the Núrí household across the early 1850s. The 1852 attempted assassination of Náṣir al-Dín Sháh by an unauthorised Bábí faction produced the systematic destruction of the Bábí community in Persia and the imprisonment of Bahá'u'lláh in the Síyáh-Chál for four months. The 1853 exile to Baghdád followed.
Mírzá Mihdí — then five years old — was left behind in Tehran when the rest of the family departed for Baghdád. His mother Ásíyih Khánum and his siblings made the overland journey to Baghdád across the difficult winter conditions; Mihdí was considered too young for the difficult journey and was left in the care of relatives in Tehran.
He remained in Tehran for the subsequent eight or nine years — separated from his parents and siblings across the principal years of his childhood. He was finally able to join the family in Baghdád in approximately 1860 — when he was approximately twelve years old.
The 'Akká period
From 1860 onward Mírzá Mihdí accompanied the Bahá'u'lláh family across the successive Ottoman exiles — Baghdád (continuing until 1863), Constantinople (1863), Adrianople (1863–1868), and finally 'Akká (from 1868 onward). He was twenty when the family arrived in 'Akká.
He became, across the subsequent two years (1868–1870), one of the principal members of the Bahá'í household in 'Akká. He served as amanuensis to Bahá'u'lláh — recording the revealed Tablets that the Manifestation dictated. He supported his elder brother 'Abbás Effendi (then twenty-four) in the various practical responsibilities of the 'Akká household. He attended to the daily needs of his mother Ásíyih Khánum and his sister Bahíyyih Khánum.
He was, by every account of those who knew him, a young man of particular spiritual depth. He spent substantial portions of his days in prayer. He cultivated the spiritual disciplines that the Bahá'í life requires. He was of unusual physical beauty — like his sister Bahíyyih Khánum and his elder brother 'Abbás Effendi, all of whom inherited the Núrí family's physical distinction.
The fall
On the evening of 22 June 1870 Mírzá Mihdí was pacing on the roof of the barracks of 'Akká in which the Bahá'í household was then confined. He was walking and reciting prayers — the pattern he had established across the 'Akká months as the means of maintaining the spiritual life under the conditions of physical confinement.
He walked too close to a skylight in the roof. The skylight was open. He fell through it. He landed on a wooden crate below. The fall was severe — he sustained internal injuries that the Ottoman prison conditions could not adequately treat.
He lingered for approximately twenty-two hours. Bahá'u'lláh attended at his bedside. The Manifestation offered to heal him through divine intervention if Mírzá Mihdí wished it. Mírzá Mihdí requested instead that his death be accepted as a sacrifice — that his young life serve, in some way, the broader purposes of the Faith his father had come to establish.
He died on the evening of 23 June 1870. He was approximately twenty-two years old.
Bahá'u'lláh's response
Bahá'u'lláh's response to the death of His youngest son was. He revealed Tablets in the immediate aftermath expressing the profound grief of the loss combined with the acceptance of the sacrifice that Mírzá Mihdí had offered.
Bahá'u'lláh subsequently addressed the death in various Tablets across the subsequent years. The principal themes were: the recognition that Mírzá Mihdí had offered his life as a sacrifice for the Cause; the particular spiritual elevation that the sacrifice conferred on the young man; the recognition that the sacrifice would, in significant measure, contribute to the subsequent unfolding of the Faith — including, by some accounts, the subsequent relaxation of the 'Akká imprisonment conditions that allowed subsequent Western pilgrim visits.
The titles
Bahá'u'lláh conferred on Mírzá Mihdí the title Ghuṣn-i-Aṭhar ("the Purest Branch") — the designation by which the subsequent Bahá'í tradition has remembered him. The title is significant in the Bahá'í institutional vocabulary; the Aghṣán (Branches — the sons of Bahá'u'lláh) were designated as particular figures in the Bahá'í institutional structure Bahá'u'lláh had established. The Purest Branch designation placed Mírzá Mihdí particularly among the Aghṣán — the young man whose sacrifice had distinguished him.
The subsequent transmission of remains
Mírzá Mihdí was buried initially in the Bahá'í cemetery of 'Akká — outside the city walls in the small Muslim cemetery that had been designated for the Bahá'í household burials. His remains remained there for sixty-nine years — across the subsequent decades of the 'Akká period, the 'Abdu'l-Bahá ministry, and the first eighteen years of Shoghi Effendi's Guardianship.
In December 1939 Shoghi Effendi undertook the transfer of Mírzá Mihdí's remains from the 'Akká cemetery to the Monument Gardens on Mount Carmel near the Shrine of the Báb. The Monument Gardens contain the graves of the principal members of Bahá'u'lláh's family — the Greatest Holy Leaf (Bahíyyih Khánum, died 1932), Ásíyih Khánum (Mírzá Mihdí's mother, died 1886, transferred at the same time as Mihdí), and others. The Mírzá Mihdí grave at the Monument Gardens has been, across the subsequent eighty-plus years, one of the principal Bahá'í pilgrim sites on Mount Carmel.
The significance
Mírzá Mihdí — the Purest Branch — has been remembered in the Bahá'í tradition as the young son of Bahá'u'lláh whose death at twenty-two, accepted as a sacrifice, placed him among the principal early Bahá'í martyrs. The particular features of his witness — the childhood separation from the family, the young adult years in the Ottoman exile, the sustained spiritual practice in the 'Akká barracks, the fall through the skylight, the twenty-two-hour decision to accept death as a sacrifice rather than request healing — have carried, in the Bahá'í imagination, the particular weight that the Purest Branch designation expresses.
He had been, in the Bahá'í imagination, the young son of the Manifestation whose life and death exemplified the deepest pattern of Bahá'í witness — the young man who had been given the opportunity to live and had chosen instead to offer the life as sacrifice.
